The Flyers strike the Surge,4-3.
The Mississippi Surge took to the ice and went head-to-head with archrival Pensacola Ice Flyers. It was "Military Appreciation Night". The Surge were greeted by 4153 fans in the PowerPlant and in honor of our military, the team wore special jerseys to be auctioned off after the game.
The game would start out with a huge fight between Kyle Kudroch and William Foster at 0:02, which ended in a draw. The Ice Flyers of Pensacola came out strong, controlling a lot of the play. Aaron Schmit and Steve Bergin worked the puck into the offensive zone, and former Surge player Brent Clarke batted it home at 13:25 to give Pensacola the early 1-0 lead. Just 2 minutes later Pensacola was at it again and Aaron Schmit decided to light the lamp himself at 15:53 and he blasted it past Smiley. Kyle Atkins and Gabriel Boutin-Gagnon came out with assists. The period would end with the Ice Flyers on top 2-0.
The second period had a flurry of goals and Mississippi controlled the pace of play but couldn't stop the answering efforts of Pensacola. Matt Gordon would be the first to get the Surge on the board after Matt Ridley drove down the slot, Kyle Kudroch with the shot and Matt Gordon tapped in the rebound at 6:53. Leo Thomas decided to come back with a goal of his own. The Ice Flyers regained their 2 goal lead when Steve Bergin found Tyler Soehner, with Leo Thomas blasting a rebound, giving Pensacola a 3-1 lead at 8:50.
Adam Stuart drove the puck down the slot with a Pensacola player all over him at the 9:24 mark. This would be the second night in a row Mississippi would be awarded a penalty shot, but this time couldn't put it in the basket, with an unsuccessful penalty shot. The score remained 3-1. A minute later in the second period, Kyle Vandermale tapped one in with assists going to Matt Gordon and Kyle Kudroch. James Isaacs would receive a roughing minor penalty at 12:36 and Pensacola would capitalize on the powerplay as John Dunbar put it past Kiefer Smiley, Kyle Atkins and Ryan Salvis assisting at 13:31.
Tyler Soehner received a roughing penalty of his own at 15:27 and Mississippi would only need 7 seconds to capitalize. They won the faceoff and James Isaacs passed it to Derek Graham who drove the net and smacked it home to get the Surge within one once again, score being 4-3 Ice Flyers leading.
The third period was a very fast period with Mississippi receiving 2 penalties that were not proven costly on the scoreboard, but were very timely and the Ice Flyers were able to play keep away. At the end of the game Leo Thomas dropped on the puck on the final faceoff to bleed the last 2 seconds and the Surge didn't take kind to the actions of Thomas and a scrum ensued.
Kiefer Smiley was pulled towards the end of the game, and after the scrum Ross Mackinnon, Pensacola goaltender challenged Smiley and anyone who knows Smiley knows he doesn't back away from a fight. The two tussled with Smiley getting the better of the two, and 4153 fans went home pumped up but the Ice Flyers skated away and flew home with the win, 4-3.
Kiefer Smiley stopped 20 of 24 shots and suffered the loss.
Ross Mackinnon saved 29 of 32 shots to come out with the win
