VETERAN FORWARD ZULTEK ADDED TO SURGE

BILOXI, MS – The Mississippi Surge announced on Friday that they have signed forward Matt Zultek.

“Matt is a guy who has won championships on both the junior and professional levels,” said head coach Steffon Walby. “I expect him to bring skill, size, and veteran leadership to our community and our club, all of which we value highly.”

A native of Mississauga, Ontario, Zultek was selected in the first round (15th overall) by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft and in the second round (56th overall) by the Boston Bruins in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. Following a junior career that saw him score the Memorial Cup-winning goal for the Ottawa 67s in 1999, Zultek turned professional in 2000-01 with Philadelphia of the American Hockey League, appearing in 16 regular season games and notching five points (1g, 4a).

In 2005, the 6-4, 210-pound Zultek spent the majority of the season with Trenton of the ECHL, scoring 12 goals and 17 assists and accruing 231 penalty minutes in 60 regular season games, and appearing in 13 playoff games, scoring one goal and adding 30 penalty minutes as Trenton claimed the Kelly Cup Championship. In 349 ECHL regular season games, Zultek scored 267 points (130g, 137a) with Toledo, Greenville, and Trenton. Most recently, Zultek skated with Rapid City of the Central Hockey League, scoring six goals and four assists last season.
